Kitchen Overview

Step into a kitchen that exudes both modern sophistication and inviting warmth. The space is anchored by a stunning natural quartzite countertop, its veined patterns reminiscent of a sun-drenched landscape. The countertop stretches across the kitchen, gracing both the perimeter cabinetry and the curved island, its gentle curves adding a touch of dynamism to the layout.

White oak cabinetry provides a grounding contrast to the cool quartzite. The rich, natural grain of the wood, paired with a crisp white paint, create a sense of airiness and visual lightness. This interplay of textures and tones adds depth and dimension to the space. 

Breaking away from the traditional rectilinear lines, the island features curved panels that echo the countertop's gentle sweep. This unexpected detail adds a touch of whimsy and softens the overall aesthetic. The warm vinyl flooring complements the wood cabinetry, creating a sense of continuity underfoot.

Crafted Contemporary

The homeowners’ desire for a contemporary, but welcoming, kitchen guided material and finish choices. Not wanting to part with their beautiful existing South American Amodium floor, the designer located more material to weave almost seamlessly in with the old. Harmonizing with the richness of the floor, light “Driftwood” stained alder perimeter cabinets and painted “Sea Haze” maple cabinets at the island bring a balance of warm and cool tones. Base and tall cabinet pull outs put cooking utensils and pantry items within reach. An asymmetrical wall cabinet layout gives the kitchen a contemporary feel that meets the homeowners’ aesthetics. Additionally, the backsplash acts as a strong focal point with bold veining, which is book-matched not directly across the backsplash, but moving from behind the cooktop across to the island at the work station sink bringing the space together.

Custom Hood and Island Details

By raising the dropped ceilings, and removing a support post in the center of the entry, we transformed an uninspiring U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula into a bright and functional kitchen. The new island and high-end appliances featuring the Wolf range, 42" Subzero refrigerator, and the Fisher Paykel dishwasher drawers make cooking and entertaining a breeze. The island is a main hub in the kitchen, housing the Wolf microwave drawer, the  Scottsman ice maker and the beautiful hammered stainless steel prep sink adjacent from the refrigerator for quick rinsing. Special attention was given to the custom cabinetry to give this kitchen a timeless look. Stacked glass cabinets add depth and extra storage, corbels were added at the island with a bead board detail to make the island a statement piece, and all the appliances were paneled to further emphasis a classic kitchen.

This Fairbanks ranch kitchen remodel project masterfully blends a contemporary matte finished cabinetry front with the warmth and texture of wire brushed oak veneer. The result is a stunning and sophisticated space that is both functional and inviting.

The inspiration for this kitchen remodel came from the desire to create a space that was both modern and timeless.  A place that a young family can raise their children and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Free Standing Tub

Large Primary Bath remodel. A center island was added to add storage and counter top to facilitate packing for the clients travels. The new free-standing stone tub replaces a raised tub. The new shower has plenty of room for 2 person steam session. The designed added a coffee maker and under counter refrigerator for the days the clients want to hang out in their adjoining spacious bedroom or curl up on the settee. The remodel included the closet (not shown) with added purse storage cabinet.

The clients purchased this traditional styled home knowing that it would need to be updated to meet their more contemporary design esthetic. Having worked with the clients on 3 other homes, the clients and I had a good understanding of direction the project would take. The design had to be easy to maintain, create easy passages from one area to another and aesthetically add elements of Southwest design with earthy color pallets, layered textural elements with simple natural materials.

Luxury Home Renovation

Bamboo soaking tub La Jolla- East Meets West

The intent of this design is to integrate the clients love for Japanese aesthetic, create an open and airy space, and maintain natural elements that evoke a warm inviting environment. A traditional Japanese soaking tub made from Hinoki wood was selected as the focal point of the bathroom. It not only adds visual warmth to the space, but it infuses a cedar aroma into the air. A live-edge wood shelf and custom chiseled wood post are used to frame and define the bathing area. Tile depicting Japanese Shou Sugi Ban (charred wood planks) was chosen as the flooring for the wet areas. A neutral toned tile with fabric texture defines the dry areas in the room. The curb-less shower and floating back lit vanity accentuate the open feel of the space. The organic nature of the handwoven window shade, shoji screen closet doors and antique bathing stool counterbalance the hard surface materials throughout.

Landmark Makeover- La Jolla

Architect, Florence Palmer, designed and built this home in 1929.  The home is now listed as one of San Diego’s Landmarks in La Jolla.  Our main goal with the kitchen remodel was to keep the integrity of the house.  Though the home is almost 90 years old, the clients and I found the original design still had relevance today and could easily translate into a more contemporary version of the original design.

Spicy Craftsman

The homeowner wanted to keep the Spanish/Mexican flavor of this 1939 Craftsman bungalow in Point Loma.  She was fearless in her color choices for the backsplash to reflect this esthetic. 
Since the kitchen is open to the dining room and living room, we decided to add the color on the backsplash with neutral white Craftsman style cabinets as the background.

Outdoor Style

My clients came to me wanting to create an outdoor BBQ area where they can entertain and relax in the evenings. This custom home had an amazing private front yard area, lush with old growth avocado trees and beautiful flowers. Using NatureKast cabinetry, this outdoor kitchen features a sink, built-in BBQ, side burner, griddle, undercounter refrigerator, and an integrated table. An infrared heat lamp ensures you can use the space year-round.

Spanish style Kitchen remodel, large island and wood beams

Our major goal was to have the ‘kitchen addition’, keep the authentic Spanish Revival style in this 1929 home.  To do this, we decided to imbed tiles into the drywall; used small crown to finish off the top of the cabinets while calling attention to the detail of beams and corbels; suggested antique lighting over the island and between the windows. Architectural details were replicas from other parts of the home.

The simplicity of the rich quarter sawn White Oak cabinetry speaks to the Victorian’s love of natural finishes while the limited number of embellishments such as dentil molding, egg and dart molding, and hand-carved corbels highlight the love of artistic craftsmanship. The fanciful Michelangelo marble adds depth and richness to the kitchen.  The counter top acts as a bridge between the oak floor, oak cabinetry, black appliances and white backsplash.  The simple black liner in the backsplash visually connects the backsplash to the counter.

This extensively renovated 1940s mid-century home seamlessly blends family living with effortless entertaining. A thoughtful front extension created a more expansive kitchen, a welcoming entry, and a second primary suite. Inside, the removal of interior walls fostered an airy, open floor plan, providing unobstructed views of the beautifully remodeled backyard. Raising the ceilings further amplified the sense of spaciousness throughout the main living area.

The kitchen is a stunning focal point, anchored by a custom copper hood with a rich bronze finish. Complementing this statement piece are elegant ivory white and warm walnut cabinetry, topped with a striking Cristallo quartzite slab featuring distinctive amber veining. Adjacent to this culinary heart, a banquette offers a comfortable and connected dining space for everyday family meals and doubles as an inviting spot for guests within the kitchen's social hub.
